In today’s episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati season 16, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan fondly recalled his own struggles after finishing college. He talked about his first earnings, searching for a job, and living with eight roommates in a small room. Bachchan sahab shared these memories with MPSC aspirant Krishna Selukar.
During their conversation, Krishna mentioned that he also stays with eight people in a single room. He explained that, in his village in the Jalna district, there are no facilities for Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) preparation. To study, he had to move to Pune, an educational hub. He said, “Waha mere kamre mein 8 log rehte hai” (Eight people stay in my room).
Bachchan sahab, surprised but understanding, responded, “8 log ek kamre mein? (Eight people in a room?) 8 se humein itna zyada aashcharya nai. Hum jab apna college se padhai karke nikle, toh naukri dhundhne nikle. Toh hum Kolkata gaye, waha kisi tarah se naukri mil gayi. Rs 400 mahine ke. Waha par bhi, sir, hum jaha reh rahe the na, 8 log ek kamre mein the” (I’m not surprised by eight people in a room. When I finished my studies and went looking for a job, I ended up in Kolkata and found a job that paid me Rs 400 a month. Even there, I lived with eight people in a room).
Bachchan sahab then reminisced about the joy of living with others despite the hardships. Krishna’s story about living in a hostel with eight others resonated with him. He added, “Bahut maza aata tha. The humlog 8, palang tha do. Zameen par sona padta tha. Aapas mein khush rehte the. Aapas mein jhagda hota tha aaj idhar soenge, kaun palang pe soega, bistar par rahega” (We had a lot of fun. There were eight of us, but only two beds. We had to sleep on the floor, and we were happy together. We used to argue about who would sleep on the bed or on the floor).
